Billboard Music Awards 2018

The 2018 Billboard Music Award is an honor given by Billboard, a publication and music popularity chart covering the music business. The Billboard Music Awards show had been held annually since 1989 in December until it went dormant in 2006. The awards returned in 2011 and is held annually in May. The 2016 Billboard Music Awards aired live on May 22 at 8/7c on ABC.

Unlike other awards, such as the Grammy Award, which determine nominations as a result of the highest votes received by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on United States year-end chart performance according to Nielsen data for sales, number of downloads and total airplay. Awards were given for the top album/artist/single in different genres. Since 1992, the awards also give out a Billboard Century Award—the magazine's highest honor for creative achievement and named for Billboard's centennial in 1994. The award was renamed the Icon Award in 2011. Michael Jackson has won the most awards with 40 wins. Janet Jackson has won the most awards for female artist with 33 wins.

From 1989 to 2006, the show had the same categories and category names every year. In 2011, for the first time, all of the awards were renamed to "Top [award title]". The "of the year" portion of each category title no longer exists, and many of the awards have been further renamed. Other awards, including both "crossover" awards (No. 1 Classical Crossover Artist and No. 1 Classical Crossover Album) were discontinued.

The most important categories are Top Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Hot 100 Song and Top New Artist. These categories highlighted in each award and other categories are divided by genre.

Billboard 2018 Red Carpet

At 2018 Billboard Awards Red Carpet Ms. McNeill was talking about success in the music world and how to achieve it, but she could also have been talking about the look of the evening. If the Academy Awards red carpet has become a polished marketing event with celebrities as pawns in a high-fashion game, the pink version at the Billboard awards revealed rock stars and those who aspire to be them dressed, well, seemingly by themselves.

Sure, there were big brand names on display, but aside from a select few (Versace, as worn by Priyanka Chopra and Ariana Grande, springs to mind) they were pretty much unrecognizable. When even Heidi Klum could not remember the name of the emerging designer who had made her dress (“But it’s a new designer, and I love him,” she said), it was clear this was going to be less about a runway aesthetic than a Vegas aesthetic.

Which could be summed up as: legs. Also spangles, and side cutouts. Mostly on the co-host Ciara, who started the evening in a silver Philipp Plein tabard dress held together on the sides by tiny strips at the hip, and then slipped into six — count ’em — other looks during the course of the evening, all of which revealed various body parts in unexpected ways. She has just signed with IMG Models, so perhaps she was displaying her versatility.

Still, Ciara looked positively subdued compared with Britney Spears, who set the tone for the night (well, the awards were in her current hometown) in a sheer lace romper over black undies with a long train and knee-high fishnet boots, which resembled nothing so much as Frederick’s of Hollywood meets “Game of Thrones,” though it was apparently by Reem Acra.

And so it went from there. Demi Lovato wore a sheer lace top over a black bra under a bouclé jacket and wide black trousers by Chanel before changing into a sheer T-shirt, big pants and over-the-knee boots for her performance. Zendaya wore a flesh-colored bra with a matching long skirt that made her look like a Calvin Klein mermaid. Keke Palmer was in burgundy latex (“I’m sweating from the inside,” she said). Gwen Stefani wore a transparent gown with strategically placed silver sequins for her duet with Blake Shelton that called to mind Beyoncé’s little-left-to-the-imagination Met Gala dress of 2017.

Of course, we’ve been there, done that. The naked look is, in many ways, so last year. A display of lingerie is no longer shocking, which may be why Rihanna, high priestess of the peekaboo, made the most shocking appearance of the evening — in a covered-up bronze vintage Thierry Mugler coatdress.

She changed into a black trouser suit with a mint-green fur shoulder wrap to sing, and, after that, a green-and-black tiger-striped Dries Van Noten nightie dress to receive her Chart Achievement award. But they were all relatively sedate (even the nightie dress was long and not clingy.)

The net effect was to make Rihanna look like a grown-up, an adjective that also applied to Adele, who wore a long-sleeved flower-festooned gown (which was the source of much Twitter speculation, though it turned out to be by Dolce & Gabbana) in her new video, which had its premiere during the awards. Even Madonna, who has of late displayed a pointedly non-age-appropriate tendency to excessive exposure, chose to wear a baroque purple pantsuit by Gucci in her tribute to Prince (coincidentally, purple trousers were also Kesha’s choice for the red carpet).

Music Awards Nominations 2018

2018 Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music. These measurements are tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound. The awards are based on the reporting period of tracking dates March 23, 2017 through March 17, 2018 and Billboard chart dates April 11, 2017 through April 2, 2018.  Since 1940, the Billboard charts have been the go-to guide for ranking the popularity of songs and albums, and are the ultimate measure of a musician’s success.

Music Awards 2018

Sunday's Billboard Music Awards 2018 broadcast often seemed like a battle for pop music's very soul, as fake smiles and cheesy promo tie-ins vied with serious vocal prowess and displays of genuine emotion for three long, eventful hours. Rising stars like Shawn Mendes and Troye Sivan earned their places on the big stage, but it was the bona fide divas (Rihanna, Celine Dion and Adele, who didn't even sing live) – and always-welcome veteran Stevie Wonder – who ultimately owned the night. Here's who triumphed and tanked at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena.

Before Rihanna picked up the fan-voted Chart Achievement Award, she issued a timely reminder that Beyoncé isn't the only superstar singer to release a major LP in 2016. The decidedly old-school "Love on the Brain" – one of Anti's surprisingly potent deep cuts – is a passion-fueled torch song given a Rihanna spin ("I'm tired of being played like a violin/What do I gotta do to get in your motherfuckin' heart?" she sings on record). On Sunday night she fully leaned into the track, showcasing the raspy, gritty side of her voice. Her fiery performance showed not just how far she's come since the "Pon De Replay" days but where she could potentially take her overflowing charisma and newly unearthed vocal nuance.

After all of the past week's backstage drama, Kesha quietly prevailed on Sunday. To recap: Dr. Luke's label Kemosabe initially granted Kesha permission to perform at the BBMAs, then changed its mind, then finally relented when the singer denied the rumor that her performance would address her legal battles with Luke and his imprint. Striking in black bolo tie and white suit, Kesha delivered the tribute to Bob Dylan she's said she always intended, backed by Ben Folds' piano and a stark violin accompaniment. Kesha's version of "It Ain't Me Babe" was understated and heartfelt; the singer turned Dylan's steely ballad into a statement of quiet strength, suggesting her refusal to be defined by others. The standing ovation she received – a long overdue moment of dignity for an artist whose musical dreams became real-world nightmares – was anything but obligatory.

2018 Billboard Music Awards Predictions

Unlike other award shows, where the trophies handed out are based on the whims of a capricious voting body, the 2018 Billboard Music Awards are all about downloads, airplay, and commercial performance. The show honors those who came out on top of the Nielsen year-end music charts. With that method, the performers who may win pretty much pick themselves, but you never know, there could be an upset.

Since this is all about commercial performance, in this day and age, you don’t talk about record sales without gasping in awe at what Adele achieved at the end of 2017. Upon its release, her third studio album 25 instantly became 2017’s best-selling album, and it broke numerous records, including the single-week sales record for an album. That’s why Billboard is likely to give the British popstress multiple nods in the Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album for 25, and the Top Hot 100 Song for “Hello.”

It wouldn’t be a Billboard Awards without the specter of Taylor Swift looming above, though. Her Grammy-award-winning Album of the Year 1989 came out in 2017, and the Billboard Awards roundly honored the record at last year's ceremony. Expect some of her late-released singles (“Wildest Dreams,” “Out Of The Woods”) to get nominations, and she should be a shoo-in for Top Touring Artist. The other big names that dominated 2017 were The Weeknd and Justin Bieber. The former experienced the most successful year in his career yet. The Weeknd’s record, Beauty Behind the Madness debuted at No. 1, and featured a trio of top 10 hits, including the No. 1 hit “Can’t Feel My Face.” Bieber matched The Weeknd’s feat note-for-note as his album, Purpose, debuted at No. 1 and also featured three top ten hits, including “Sorry” and “What Do You Mean?” which both spent time on the top of the chart. The two should receive several nominations, including Top Male Artist and Top Artist.
